Downside House

Beautiful self-catering accommodation in the heart of Chilcompton village

Downside House has two holiday cottages, The Nook and The Garden Rooms, offering high quality self-catering holiday accommodation for 2 and 4 respectively (or 6 if you want to rent the two cottages together). Both can also accommodate an infant in a cot.

The two cottages sit in the grounds of Downside House - a grade II listed building dating back to 1734, which was once the doctor's house for Downside School and Abbey. The cottages have been renovated to a very high standard offering comfort, warmth and style with beautiful furnishings and modern appliances. They are also both secluded and private. And they each offer the height of luxury with a character twist, their own private garden, off road parking and free WiFi.

Situated in the heart of Chilcompton, the cottages are the perfect place from which to explore the beautiful sights Bath, Wells and Somerset have to offer.

Open all year round we cater for parties of 2, 4, or 6 should you want to take both properties. We provide first class facilities for everyone.

The Garden Rooms sleep up to four guests (plus an infant in a cot) and The Nook sleeps up to two (plus an infant in a cot).

My husband and I spent a couple of days in The Nook at Downside House. To say our stay was comfortable would be an understatement. The accommodation was stylish, clean and cosy, with everything needed for a short or long stay. The bed was heaven giving us the best nights' sleep we have had in an age. A comfy bed and fluffy towels, what more do you want? We will definitely be coming back.

We stayed in The Garden Rooms, which we found to be modern, clean and very comfortable. It was fully equipped with all you need for a longer stay. It is close to the local pub and there is even a private garden area with quality outdoor furniture – we would definitely stay here again.

Chilcompton itself appears in the Domesday Book and is now a vibrant, eclectic village sitting on the northern slopes of the Mendip hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). It has some lovely local walks and is surrounded by picturesque countryside and historic charm. The village offers two excellent eateries, The Redan Inn which is a newly refurbished Gastro Pub and The Somerset Wagon.

Chilcompton also has a post office and local co-op, an award winning café, The Holy Cow, and a beauty treatment centre, The Treatment Rooms, offering holistic massage and beauty treatments amongst others. Chilcompton is also the birthplace of the Mulberry Bag, they are still made here to this day at ‘The Rookery’. There is a bus service running into both Bath, Wells and surrounding areas from the village should you wish.

We also have the beautiful Downside Abbey Church on our doorstep, one of only four Minor Basilicas in England and has been designated by English Heritage as a grade I listed building.
